Guest Post: Phyl Manning (Here, There and Otherwhere Blog Tour)

As a part of the Here, There and Otherwhere Blog Tour I am happy to welcome Phyl Manning to my blog today to talk about the importance of making your characters believable.

***

People, of course, are not automated creatures, and an author cannot "create" them indelibly on paper by mechanized means. Instead, the writer gives them the breath of life subtly, by using often small but distinctive features—one or more (not too many!) physical and/or behavioral element(s)—which make that character distinct. John Lescroat’s Glitsky is always glum (even though he loves family and friends without restraint) and bears a scar which crosses his lips to blemish his appearance and frighten the observer. Lee Child’s Jack Reacher is ready for the road (usually by means of hitchhiking) by putting his toothbrush in his pocket along with a couple of bucks or a few thousand, whatever he happens to have. He’s also indelible to reader by being 6'5" tall and weighing two and a half hundred pounds (all muscle, of course).

Or one identifying characteristic might be some unusual verbal ploy—the criminal who cannot speak without profanity, the loving father who cannot address his children without criticizing, the mom who characteristically predicts doom in all situations, then sobs. Consider Dickens, with his Uriah Heep who is cloyingly humble (until he’s not). And there’s Oliver Twist, poor child, who always wants "some more." Shakespeare—a master at subtle delineations that make his characters live on through the centuries. Who has trouble picturing Lady Macbeth wiping her dry hands? And (same drama) those three witches who will forever be stirring a big black (as I see it) pot of repugnant contents.

Because my characters are so real to me, I have to make special effort to dream up and throw in (and subtly repeat) a few identifying elements for each one who isn’t simply a walk-through. I "see" and recognize every person—why can’t everyone else? But believe me, your reader needs help at internalizing someone who is, after all, your character and may even be based on someone you have known.

Sandra Marton Introduces the Wilde Sisters

Emily: Sense and Sensibility
(The Wilde Sisters)
by Sandra Marton Excerpt

Blurb:

Emily Wilde has led a privileged life. Now she’s trying to make it on her own in Manhattan.
Marco Santini grew up dirt poor in a Sicilian slum. Now he has everything. He’s gorgeous. He’s rich. He’s powerful. And he has all the beautiful women a man could ask for.
Then, one rainy night, he sees a woman standing alone on a deserted New York street corner. Emily is clearly in need of help, but she’s not foolish enough to step into Marco’s chauffeured Mercedes. It takes a lot of convincing before she lets him take her to her apartment. He swears he’s not going to do anything he shouldn't and he means it--but she’s in his arms before they can stop themselves.
Still, it’s only a kiss, just one kiss in a moment torn out of time. That’s what they both think.
But Fate has other plans, starting with an unexpected job offer and a business trip to Paris that explodes in a passion so hot it will change everything--everything but the web of lies that traps them both.

Excerpt:

She walked to him, curled her fingers into his shirt, rose on her toes and pressed her mouth to his. He didn’t move. Didn’t touch her. He stood tall and straight and for what seemed the longest moment of her life, she thought she’d made a mistake.

Then he groaned, gathered her into his arms and captured her lips with his.

The earth spun.

She clung to him more tightly because if she didn’t, surely she would fall.
He whispered her name against her mouth; she whispered his and he cursed softly and swung her up into his arms.

She buried her face against his throat. Wound her arms around his neck. Trembled as he carried her across the room to a long, wide sofa and lowered her to it.

What are you doing? a voice inside Marco said.

She was all the things he’d thought. Naïve. Unsophisticated. He could tell by the way she was responding to him. Nothing held back. Nothing of the temptress. She was making little sounds that went straight through him, whimpers of need that a woman with more experience would not so readily make the first time a man took her in his arms to make love to her.

And this was his office. He didn’t bring his personal life into this space. Never. Never, he thought, and then he stopped thinking, sank to his knees in front of her, drew her forward and kissed her forehead. Her eyes, her mouth. Dio, that mouth! He caught her bottom lip between his teeth, bit lightly and she opened to him, offered him her sweet taste.

“Please,” she whispered, “Marco, please…”

He groaned, thrust his hands into her hair. The band with which she’d secured the ponytail broke; her hair tumbled loose, fell over his fingers like fine silk. He buried his face in the shining strands and then he took her mouth again, kissed her and kissed her, each time taking the kiss deeper.

Finally, he drew back, framed her face with his hands and said her name. She opened her eyes. They were blurred with desire, the pupils enormous.
He felt the last of his self-control slipping away.

Guest Post-JESS HUNTER

ONE OF MY PASSIONS

I am passionate about fitness. Passionate is a nice word. I think about it all the time. Every decision I make, in some way, circles around the idea of fitness. If fitness were a woman, I would be a weird stalker man that is always right behind fitness, breathing heavy and sweating.

My nutrition and workout plans have changed drastically from one to another every few months. I have done everything you can think of, the fad stuff on late night TV, the extreme stuff your in-shape sibling dares you to try, the experimental stuff you wonder how people survive, all of it.

Several of my friends and family members (Sable...) question me about how strangely addicted I am to this part of my life, and I gasp. I am amazed that most people are NOT obsessed with improving that aspect of their existence. If you have a car, the LEAST you can do is gas it up when it's empty and change the oil every 7000 miles, right? Why wouldn't you treat your body the same way?

I was most recently on a crazy plan. Well, it was crazy to someone uninitiated into that world. For me, it seemed pretty intuitive. It came from a blog called Chaos & Pain by Jamie Lewis. His eating plan, dubbed the obnoxiously masculine (just the way I like it) Apex Predator Diet, was essentially a ketogenic diet (like Atkins) that focused primarily on organic (like Paleolithic) while eating meat almost exclusively off the bone, green vegetables and ridiculous amounts of supplemented animal proteins. The workout that came with it was equally as belligerent. It was 8-12 sets of 1-3 reps of 85-95% of your one rep max. (a weight you can only lift once)

I started as I start most things, enthusiastically and loudly, bragging about it to everyone who would listen and grunting and lifting things. Sable played along and called me her "little viking" and the "baby barbarian" even though deep down, she was probably as terrified of me as anyone else would be. She was just putting on a good sister show.

But today, something happened, something that does happen to me occasionally, and I'm glad I caught it quickly before it did any real damage.

Things started to grow stale. My mood was dipping, my testosterone was sinking (I can tell by my energy and sex-drive) and I was less and less excited to go to the gym. I was finding it difficult to get my work done and getting out of bed was the most strenuous part of the day.

But, because of all the experience I have with stupidly powerful determination and stubbornly relentless discipline, I understand exactly what I needed: a change.

I went and saw a movie to clear my head. (Hangover 3) Then i got two foot-long italian style subs from New York Pizza Co., one with italian sausage and red peppers, the other with chipped beef, mozzarella, and sauteed onions. I thought, and I read, and I researched.

And now, having decided on the ABC diet, (an exciting French creation) a bodybuilder's split of 2x days of moderate rep lifting, and a trip to Jamie's blog for motivation and closure, I feel a renewed vigor and energy. I feel great, like I just downed a two-liter bottle of Coke Zero. (sponsor)

Which, I did, also.

Moral of the story: and this is for everyone, not just Sable, embrace change. I know it can be scary. Routines are our friends in many ways. But you need it. And when things get rough, or tedious, or start to drag, seek out change. Don't change your goals, never give up your ambitions, but learn to feel comfortable trying new and different roads to get there.

Tonight, I'm doing posterior delts, rhomboids, hamstrings and forearm lifts with a triple cheeseburger and a protein shake. How about you?

Speaking of passions, here is a passionate excerpt from my book - a sexy one.

David yawned. He was surprised that he had fallen asleep, especially since moments before Jenna had accompanied him to the room, she had been giving him clear signals of an exciting playtime to come. But somehow, he had resisted the urge to follow his rock-hard cock’s urging to tackle Jenna and do with her what nature told him to.

He let his eyes open groggily. No need to rush. He looked around and saw the beautiful hotel room he had gotten for them. The sheets were crisp. The light of the bedside lamp was so warm, gentle and unobtrusive that nobody would have trouble sleeping next to it. He looked down beside him, expecting to see Jenna’s sultry figure tucked up close.

She was gone. David’s eyes opened wider. Instantly he was alert. Raising his head, he saw her. Across the room was Jenna, wearing sexy black lingerie and fishnet stockings. She had a little crop in her hand in the fuzzy shape of a heart. David smiled. “What on Earth are you planning? You can’t be thinking you are going to use that on me, can you?”

“I don’t know. What are you going to do about it?” She swung it down crisply, letting it clap her toned thigh with a sensual snap.

David leaned forward and tried to bring his hand to his face to wipe the sleep from his eyes, but it wouldn’t come. He turned his head to see that his little rascal had handcuffed his wrists to the headboard of their bed. His cheer and cockiness quickly turned into something else, entirely. “Let me go,” he said the words slowly and succinctly.

“Why should I? I get the feeling that you won’t be letting me use my toy on you if I do. I think it would be better if I kept you bound for a little while. Plus, it’s so nice to watch your arms struggle against the cuffs. It must be rough to have all that strength and not be able to do anything about it, huh?”

She strutted toward him, biting the crop with her lips turned up. She felt more confident with her play, confident enough to make a few of her own little dreams come true.

David rattled his cage and strained against the cuffs. He was clearly uncomfortable being so helpless. Jenna saw the power grow in his face and the muscles of his shoulders. As she pulled her little outfit down far enough for perky, little tits to pop out the top, she could see something else of his growing too.

She began to crawl across the big bed toward him, crop in her teeth. Her breasts hung down below her, and their sway made a perfect swell of cleavage visible to him. As frustrated as his head was getting, his body was begging her to do what it needed her to do.

She pulled the sheets down past his chest and stomach, showing his muscle and skin. She placed the furry end of the crop on his chest and slowly drug it down his body, following the lines his musculature had drawn for her. Quickly, and without warning, she tipped it up, and brought it down hard on his nipple.

David shook violently beneath her and she hissed with pleasure. “Did that hurt?”

“No.” He answered harshly. His jaw was clenched and his biceps were pulling on the headboard so hard that it looked like it was bending. It was a good thing the wood was so thick.

“Too bad. I guess I shall try a little harder next time.”

David’s dick was standing at complete attention, throbbing with his heartbeat. It made the bed sheet that covered it dance and wave every second.

She brushed the tip of her small whip from David’s short sideburns down his cheek to his chest and slapped the other nipple as hard as she could. It hardened from the attention, and even though David would never admit the erotic blows stung, she could see his skin turning red from the force.

“If you do that again, so help me, I will –“

“What? You’ll do what?” Jenna interrupted him with two slaps to his stomach, leaving heart shape marks across the tight, flat expanse. If only she could have doodled like this during class, schoolwork would have been so much more fun.

David shook the bed. It clapped against the wall and made a lot of noise.

Jenna put her face next to David’s ear. “Relax, Honey. You’ll wake the neighbors. You have to be quiet while I show you my skills.” And she licked his earlobe as she pulled away.

David bared his teeth. God, she was sexy. “Skills, my ass! When I get out of this, I am going to spank you so hard that the neighbors will be complaining about your screaming instead of the bed moving.”

“That’s big talk for a man who’s shackled to the bedstead.” Jenna crinkled her nose mockingly at David as she let her eyes rove down his body toward the tent he pitched below her.

Thanks for reading

Jess

MY REVIEW

This was a well written and highly entertaining story of a spoiled rich guy whose father forces him into the real world without all the glamour and money he's accustomed to. Daniel under the assumed named of John Williams is sent to the small town of Prairie, Tennessee to learn how to make it in the real world. Unhappy with his fathers decision to teach him a lesson Daniel is forced to work hard and quickly finds although life isn't easy that he never took the time to form binds and really appreciate life. He finds friendship is an employee who takes him in and love in a scared women afraid of being abandoned. Through his ups and downs of his new role in life Daniel finds what matters most in life isn't money, fast cars, or fast women, What matters is the bonds of friendship, family and using what you have to better others lives and help a community flourish again. This book is sweet, fun and fun of laughs and surprises. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Superstition-Tori Scott

Book Description

When Caitlyn Deveraux's brother Gage is killed in Iraq, she receives a necklace as part of his personal effects that she thinks is a trinket he'd purchased for her. When she scatters his ashes according his exact instructions and repeats the words he'd written, she accidentally inhales some of the ashes. From that moment on, her life as a quiet librarian is turned upside down. She's drawn into her brother's world of black ops, intrigue, and government conspiracies, working alongside Jacob Littlejohn and other members of Team Indigo to stop a general who seems hell-bent on wiping out her entire family.

A note from the Author: For those who are not fans of paranormal, Superstition is what I like to call "paranormal-lite." Superstition is primarily action-adventure with a bit of romance. Read the sample for free to see if it's something you might enjoy. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Home for Love by Aneesa Price

Book Description

Seven years ago sexy Bree fled Devil's Peak, Alaska, disillusioned with her high school romance and with a baby in her belly. Now, she's back and seeing devilishly handsome Todd again challenges her carefully constructed plans for amicable co-parenting.
Todd's delight at Bree's return swiftly turns to disgust when he discovers her secret and he vows to keep her at arm's length. Upon discovering the context behind her secreting their child, he decides to give their daughter the love and stable family home he never knew. Despite her attraction to Todd, Bree has no interest in rekindling their relationship and is focused on settling into the town.
But the town and its match-making busy-bodies are not willing to allow the lovers to remain apart and test their resolve in a series of planned misadventures.
Bree is home for good but will she be home for love?

My Review

This story is a wonderfully written love story that will warm your heart. Bree decides to return home with her daughter in tow after taking off years ago and leaving her then sweetheart Todd in the dark. She returns and surprises him with the news of the child she has kept a secret from him all these years. Emotions are high but these two characters work together to create a warm family atmosphere for their daughter. At the same time old feelings are rekindled and romance ensues. They slowly work through their insecurities and let the past go and work together to rebuild their relationship in the here and now. I loved these characters and their responses and actions show humanity at it's best. I also loved there that there was no love triangle which seems to have become a cliche in romance novels. It's an honest emotional love story and I suggest everyone reads it!

Disoriented and heartbroken, Elizabeth is desperate to know the truth. Does he truly love her--or did he simply woo her out of the dire need to accomplish an inevitable royal obligation?

Prince William Erik XIV, sole heir to the throne of the Highest Royal Coven of Europe, has a crucial agenda. He has been searching for his Twin Flame, so that together, they can fulfill their destiny. The Prince had everything under control--until he met Elizabeth Hamilton, and discovered she was nothing like the one he had envisioned and waited for, for over a hundred years.

MY REVIEW

Elizabeth Hamilton doesn't think of herself as anything special. She is just an average teenager, hangs out with friends, gets excited about school events, and is frustrated with her mother. Until a mysterious, branding shows up on the back of her neck and her world is flipped upside down. For the umpteenth time, Elizabeth is forced to attend a new school for reasons she doesn't understand. Her concerns of being accepted, making new friends, and managing old relationships soon becomes the least of her worries. She doesn't have any interest in finding love and doesn't believe in destiny, but as situations unfold and chaos surrounds her, Elizabeth quickly learns she isn't in control.
The character of Elizabeth is lovable and you will be able to relate to her. Elizabeth's friends are loyal, understanding, and humorous, qualities everyone searches for in friendship. The love triangle is believable, as a reader, I didn't know who was right for her since they each possessed such strong qualities. The relationship Elizabeth has with her mother is more than the average teen angst, but you learn that though her mother’s decisions didn't always seem practical they were always made out of love and protection for her child. All in all The Silver Eyed Prince is a fantastic read, it encompasses action, adventure, mystery, fantasy, romance, and is a story of coming of age. It left me satisfied but like any good story left me wanting more, wanting to know what other adventures lie ahead for our lovable protagonist.

Another amazing addition to the Ruby Blue Series by Julie Cassar

Sky BLUE by Julie Cassar
I don't usually read YA books because they fail to keep me interested, however this is a series for young and old alike. The characters are sweet, fun, courageous, and keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. The author draws you into her imaginary world with vivid descriptions and a wonderfully written story line. You'll find yourself wrapped into the adventure along with Ruby and her friends as they go up against a disturbed sky princess who longs for Brennan's affection. After all that's happened in the previous book Brennnan shows up as Ruby's bodyguard and she is NOT happy to have him shadow her during her senior year of high school.

Things get complicated when Ruby's boyfriend sees her with Brennan and at the same time, Ruby is confused about her feelings for the two men in her life. Then to complicate matters more Katrina shows up at school and her intentions are obviously not well intended. She dislikes Ruby and enjoys causing her pain by openly flirting with not only Brennan but Nick as well.

The four friends (Ruby, Brennan, Anya, and Jeremy) embark on a journey to save Ruby's boyfriend, Nick, after Katrina kidnaps him in an attempt to sway Brennan and hurt Ruby at the same time. Ruby along with Anya and Brennan's help discovers she has new gifts as well.

Sky Blue is a thoroughly entertaining read with everything you could possibly want in a book and characters you can't help but love.

Tori Scott's Hot New Release

Book Description

Bull rider Cooper Saunders has a shot at the PBR championship until a bull not only shatters his body and puts him in danger of never walking again, but it also tramples his spirit. Cooper is ready to give up on life, not wanting to be a burden on others, until his neighbors in Morris Springs, Texas, show him how much he has to live for.
Physical therapist Nancy Phillips is not about to let Cooper give up, not after she worked so hard to get him back in shape for the finals. Now she must not only help him find the will to live, but also give him the motivation to get out of that wheelchair. With the help of newly-orphaned Becky McCallum and Nancy's friends in Morris Springs, Nancy shows Cooper how much he still has to offer, to his family, the community, and to her.

The Bluest Eyes in Texas is Book Three in the Lone Star Cowboys series, with return appearances by many of the characters from Blame it on Texas and Blue Moon over Texas.

My Review 5 stars
Tori Scott does an amazing job telling this story. Cooper Saunders pro Bull rider for years and has taken numerous beatings to his body. Cooper is sent to his hometown of Morris Springs for rehab and recovery. Nancy if you've read the previous books moved to town a few years ago to be closer to her college friend. She's looking for a change in occupation. Nancy decides she want to do physical therapy. Cooper becomes one of her patients and the story progresses from there. Determined to return to bull riding, Cooper is stubborn and pushing hard to be ready to finish out the season. Nancy is attracted to him but tells herself he's not the man she's looking for , that he's too stubborn and focused on the rodeo to care about anything else. Cooper is intrigued by the sexy red headed therapist and they work together to get him ready to ride again. After being released he returns to the rodeo to finish out the season. Nancy decides to go to the rodeo in Vegas with her friends and Coopers parents. Determined to fight her attraction for Cooper she gives him the cold shoulder while at the rodeo and is determined to keep her distance until he is badly injured during his second ride. Cooper falls into a slump and basically gives up any chance at recovering again and feels he will be a burden to his family and friends, while Nancy is determined to get him on his feet again and not giving up on him. She pushes him and challenges him along the way and the sparks fly. This story is an emotional ride of courage, loss, determination and love. You feel the characters pains and triumphs, laugh and cry with them, and genuinely feel like part of their story. The Bluest Eyes in Texas is wonderfully written and will leave you wanting more. There are twists and turns and heartwarming surprises as well along the way. I can't wait until the next book in this series to see how these characters are moving forward in their new lives. Don't let this one pass by, grab you're copy today!

Michelle Taylor's The Final Stage of Abuse

The FINAL Chapter Of ABUSE

About the Author
"The FINAL Chapter Of ABUSE' is my second book. These books are educational about abuse and dysfunctional families. Abuse comes in many forms, PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, VERBALLY, CONTROLLING, etc. I have endured all forms of abuse, and during my life I actually thought this was the way life was suppose to be. I hope all that either is in a dysfunctional family or in an abusive relationship can learn from my choices, and mistakes I have made during the coarse of my life. While writing these books, and doing speaking engagements and teaching others about abuse, and dysfunctional families. I have been so blessed that God has helped me teach so many, and help so many. This is an amazing book about the abuse I endured throughout my childhood and along with my adult hood with numerous husbands. This book is one you can learn from by learning from my mistakes of not feeling no self worth, no self value, and not believing in myself as I should for many years , not knowing God as I do today. I promise you will enjoy this book so get yours now. Always trust God and have the faith because God will bring you through any situation. As I walked out on faith, from being abused mentally, verbally and more God has blessed me in ways it would be so hard for anyone to believe. I have never seen so many doors open as they have opened since the day I walked out on faith. The day I walked out was one of the scariest days of my life, I had no home, no money, no where to live, no food, no gas in my car to go far, I had no idea where I was going, how I was going to eat, and on top of all these things happening in my life, my MS was acting up so badly, that I fell and my ear was bleeding, I was in such turmoil, with so many decisions. This book is MY FINAL CHAPTER OF ABUSE!

Review

Michelle Taylor hasn't had any easy life. Like most, she has seen her fare share of struggles and strife. But, unlike so many, she has agreed to share her pain and suffering so that others, that might be going through the same situations can learn and take comfort from her words.

This is a diary into Michelle's heart, mind, soul, and life. If you need encouragement and feel like their is no hope for the situation you are in, please take the time and opportunity to read one woman's struggle with abuse and how she was finally able to put it all behind her. The Final Chapter of Abuse is a heart wrenching story that will make you laugh, cry, and want to help yourself stand up and say NO to whatever demon is lurking over your own shoulder.
